A memorandum on a unique partnership between a private and a municipal company was signed on Thursday by the development company CTP and the waste collection and waste management company SAKO Brno, in the presence of Brno city councillors. The subject of the future cooperation is the use of electricity generated by SAKO Brno from waste, to power a parking house in CTPark Líšeň in Brno. The project is part of the developer’s long-term focus on sustainable business.
CTP has taken a significant step in increasing its responsibility in the field of sustainable energy in its CTPark Líšeň. As part of the planned construction of a car park, which will be part of the business zone, it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the municipal waste management company on the purchase of electricity. The electricity generated from the processing of residual waste will be used in the power infrastructure for up to 300 electric vehicles. CTP already heats its park with hot water from the SAKO Brno production site.
“What attracts us to the project is, among other things, the synergistic ecological and financial effect. Our production area is in a close proximity to the CTPark in Líšeň and it makes sense to bring hot water and electricity to it. Moreover, due to the short distance, this will be a direct line without any distribution fees. In the future, we are also planning to use the roofs of the CTPark, as well as the buildings on the SAKO Brno premises, to generate photovoltaic energy to power electric vehicles,” said Filip Leder, Chairman of the Board of Directors, SAKO Brno.
Another point of the memorandum is the future cooperation between the two parties on the use of electrolyser to produce hydrogen. The generated hydrogen will be used industrially, or as an environmentally friendly fuel for logistics transport’s infrastructure. The resulting cooperation is part of CTP’s long-term strategy for creating highly sustainable and self-sufficient parks, called ‘islands of sustainability’.
“The idea of this cooperation was born at the beginning of last year and should be realised at the end of 2023. I highly value our continuing to develop the cooperation with the city of Brno, where we have now also established a partnership with the city’s company involved in hydrogen mobility research. This unique project will bring innovative energy solutions to the former Zetor site,” said Michal Dospěl, Regional Project Manager, CTP ČR.
“We actively support innovative solutions in our city. We have been cooperating with CTP in the development of Brno for a long time and I am very pleased that this is a cooperation between a municipal company and a private investor, which supports sustainable and considerate business in our region. Any step taken towards energy self-sufficiency is very important, especially in the current crisis. Moreover, the number of electric cars will certainly increase, therefore the development of the necessary infrastructure is essential,” commented Markéta Vaňková, Mayor of Brno.
“Thanks to the municipal company SAKO Brno, we are able to produce a large amount of energy directly on the territory of the city of Brno and use it immediately. Since the completion of the third incineration line, we have been able to produce up to 42% of the consumed energy, thanks to the energy recovery of waste. We do not have to transport any energy to Brno from other cities or via other suppliers. This is the road to a real energy independence. I appreciate the involvement of municipal companies in the area of electromobility, Teplárny Brno has installed 50, and SAKO Brno 302, charging stations in the last 4 years. I also value the cooperation of the city with the private sector, such cooperation is absolutely crucial if we want to achieve the emission reduction targets that we have set in our ‘action plan’,” added Petr Hladík, 1st Deputy Mayor of Brno.
“Establishing partnerships with local stakeholders allows us to introduce diverse and modern solutions in our parks and move our vision of sustainable parks forward. The use of waste-to-energy, through our cooperation with SAKO Brno, is a prime example of how we can combine concepts, that are both necessary and useful, at the municipal level and contribute to long-term sustainable business,” added David Chládek, Country Head of CTP ČR.
