Construction is to begin October 2 on a new, 8 km section of the D11 motorway, following an agreement between the environmental group Children of the Earth and the Czech Highway Authority (RSD). The environmentalists promised to withdraw their objections to the project following a pledge by RSD to ensure protection of plants and animals in the area around the road.
“We plant to hand over the construction site as quickly as possible,” said RSD’s director Jan Kroupa. “We think that we should be able to hand it over by October 2.” Children of the Earth’s chairman Miroslav Patrik said it’s important to monitor major infrastructure projects that have a negative effect on the environment. “We want the projects to be approved according to the laws and with regard to the environment with the participation of the public during the decision making. That’s why we appreciate the approach by RSD. If possible, it could be done the same way on future projects whose approvals we are actively involved in.”
