Erste Bank is taking over Citibank’s Hungarian retail business. Citibank said it wants to focus on corporate and institutional clients. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2016, following approval by the antimonopoly regulator. Market watchers see the acquisition as a part of the Hungarian government’s efforts to diminish the role commercial and retail banks play within the country’s financial sector.
