22 August 2018

The Estonian government has voted to proceed with a plan proposed by the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) for the construction of a €190 million border with Russia. The project, which will be completed by 2026, will see a modern border fence and security measures put in place along the length of Estonia’s border with Russia. Construction will begin at the southernmost part of Estonia’s Eastern border, where Estonia, Russia and Latvia meet. The initial phase of construction will see four sections of border completed, totalling 33km in length. Although Minister of the Interior Andres Anvelt confirmed the PPA’s price of the project as €190 million, Riigi Kinnisvara have warned that construction costs could increase as much as 7 percent per year.
