EU demands towards Hungary

23 November 2012

The European Commission has urged Hungary to amend taxes in the retail and telecommunications industries. The EU considers the new taxes discriminatory since they would have the biggest impact on foreign operators and is intent on taking the country to the European Court of Justice over the issue. The Hungarian government rejects the charges, saying that its decision to tax companies in those industries based on their revenues is equitable. The biggest players, it argues, can bear the highest tax burden.
The EU is giving Hungary two months to amend the taxes or face the European Court of Justice.
