EU says Hungary discriminates against judges

The European Court of Justice announced that the radical lowering of the mandatory retirement age for judges is discriminatory against age. The ECJ said in a statement that the move is not in line with the government’s proported goal of standardizing the retirement age for members of the country’s public sector. Judges, prosecutors and notaries originally had to retire when they reached the age of 70, but this was lowered by the government to just 62, something that critics claimed was politically motivated.
