Two metro lines in Bucharest are set to undergo a €538m renovation. European Union funds will cover the majority of the cost, while the Romanian state will finance the remaining 15 percent.
The EU will provide €409m in funding for the Pipera-Berceni line. Work should start in December and continue until the second half of 2017, according to the Bucharest metro operator Metrorex. EU funds will also pay for new CAF trains. The city’s Nord-Străuleşti metro line is also undergoing renovation work. The EU allocated €129m for that line, which will go toward modernizing the stations and tunnels. Work has already started and should be completed in the second half of 2016.
