4 April 2019

The European Commission approved €33m in financing for the construction of the Greece-Bulgaria gas interconnector. The gas systems between these two countries will be linked in an effort to diversify energy sources, increase energy security and lower costs. The pipeline project will be part of a public tender worth around €145m. The overall costs are expected to be around €220m. Construction is scheduled to take 18 months to complete. The 183 km pipeline, with a capacity of 3 billion cubic meters per year, will connect the Greek gas transmission system in the Komotini area with the Bulgarian system in the Stara Zagora area.
