Execution of journalists demolishes Slovakia’s political stability

5 March 2018

Slovakia’s political scene has been thrown into chaos after the execution-style murder of a journalist and his fiancee. Their brutal death is being connected with the last article he wrote, published after his death, entitled: Italian Mafia In Slovakia; Its Tentacles Reach As Far As Politics. The article claimed that members of an Italian mafia group had constructed a system of corruption in eastern Slovakia that embezzled EU funds coming into the region and had connections to people close to the country’s prime minister Robert Fico. The situation led president Andrej Kiksa to call for radical change in the country’s political landscape and to suggest early elections to be held. PM Fico and the minister of interior have both refused to resign, claiming that the priority has to be investigating the murders. Fico accused President Kiksa of dancing on the grave of the murdered journalist.
