Exodus of Ukranian construction workers slows work on D1

20 March 2020

The construction company Eurovia, which had begun work on a large portion of the D1 reconstruction earlier, announced it would halt work on the project for 14 days. Radek Mátl, director of the Czech Highway Authority, says that work on the D1 is the number one priority. “Our maximum effort will go towards maintaining progress on these projects,” he told the online transportation website zdoprava.cz. “There will probably be limited realization on a number of projects because construction companies don’t have enough capacity. Many of their employees went back to their home countries, mainly to Ukraine and to Slovakia,” he said. He added that the impact of this exodus of workers was different on each contractor. Asked if work on the D1 would be delayed he said that the motorway between Prague and Brno was its highest priority, especially in places where reconstruction was already underway. “Even if it means that work on some greenfield projects were to stop.” Matl said that highway repairs also had to go ahead as these were slowing down traffic.
