Fiala considers it necessary to involve Czech companies in the reconstruction of Ukraine

5 July 2022

Prime Minister Petr Fiala (ODS) considers it necessary to do everything to ensure that Czech companies and other entities can participate in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. He told journalists today before departing for a conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine in Lugano, Switzerland. According to him, the post-war reconstruction of the country, which was invaded by Russia on February 24, will be a task for all key players from the democratic world. Ukrainians themselves should decide on priorities.

Czechia will continue to support Ukraine with supplies of military equipment, repairs of military equipment and humanitarian aid, Fiala said. Ukraine is also one of the priorities of the presidency of the Council of the EU, which the Czechia took over on Friday.

According to the prime minister, it is necessary to prepare for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine even before the end of the conflict, so that it is then possible to help immediately. “It is important for the Czech Republic to have a chance to participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine. It will also be an opportunity for Czech companies and other entities, we will do everything to ensure that Czech companies are involved in it,” he added.

According to Fiala, post-war reconstruction is not a task for one country or just for the EU, but for all key players from the democratic world, for example the United States, Canada or Australia. “Large international companies and banks will also have to be involved,” he added.

“Ukrainians themselves should decide how it will look, what the priorities and key things will be,” says the prime minister. He therefore considers it important that Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, with whom Fiala plans to hold bilateral meetings, as well as Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytéová and Swiss President Ignatius Cassis, will attend the conference in Lugano.

From the mountains on the border between Switzerland and Italy, Fiala will move on Tuesday to Strasbourg, France, where he will speak about the presidency in a speech to the European Parliament on Wednesday.
