Fico criticizes EU sanctions against Russia

1 September 2014

The European Commission has been given one week to come up with a new and tougher set of sanctions against Russia by the EU summit on Sunday. However, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called EU sanctions both pointless and absurd, charging that Europe should first wait and see what the results of the sanctions already implemented will be before it comes up with new ones. Fico says he’s determined to fight against sanctions that would threaten Slovak economic growth. The push for further sanctions were in reaction to his presentation. Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and Cyprus criticized the implementation of further sanctions on the basis that they would hit their own economies.
