Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party dropped plans to introduce pre-ballot registration for the 2014 election after a court ruling deemed part of the proposed reform was unconstitutional. The move would have forced millions of voters to sign up online or in person before being allowed to cast their ballots in next year’s national election. Opponents claimed this new system would severely lower voter turnout, and claim this could work to the benefit of the ruling party.
