It’s been calculated that foreign companies were responsible for 27 percent of all value added in Slovenia in 2017, while employing roughly 26 percent of the workforce and carrying out 39 percent of the country’s total R&D spend. Foreign companies accounted 5.6 percent of all companies in Slovenia that year, meaning entities that were resident in Slovenia but are controlled by an institutional unit outside the country. There were owners from 106 different nations in the case of foreign affiliates, but 90 percent of them were from Europe, primarily from Italy, Serbia, Russia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Austria, Croatia and Germany.
