Former Czech Prime Minister and Civic Democrats (ODS) Chairman Mirek Topolánek is considering leaving the senior coalition party, he said in an interview published in the weekly Euro. At the ODS congress in October, Topolánek said that ODS was becoming a minor party and must pull together.
In his opinion, ODS needs to restore its image, which was damaged by party members who threatened to sink the government by rejecting its stabilization package. The deputies eventually gave up their fight, allowing the package to pass through the Lower House. To prevent something like this from happening again, Topolánek said ODS should insist on fundamental changes and organize a regular congress that would reflect the real opinions of party members.
