Czech developer Fuertes Development is planning to build a shopping center with a Kaufland hypermarket in the town of Sušice. The project is a brownfield redevelopment of the former Solo Sušice manufacturing plant that used to produce matches. Local residents want to have some of the area’s historical industrial buildings protected. The culture ministry approved protection of two of the site’s original objects as well as a garden. A local museum is considering creating an exhibition about the history of match production there. The owner of the area, Solo Matches & Flames, based in Brno, agreed with the decision to protect the two objects, but opposes the protection of the garden as the developer needs the area for car parking for the shopping center. Fuertes Development plans to build 5,000 sqm of retail space and invest CZK 200m in the project. The town of Sušice also decided to demolish the former Jitona and Schwarzkopf manufacturing plants and wants to offer the sites for development.
