During the US election campaign, Steinmeier previously described the prospect of Trump taking the White House as “frightening”. Following the election results, he said that the foundation of the strong transatlantic ties can’t be abandonned between Germany and the United States. The partnership should remain as a keystone of the country‘s foreign policy.
