Goldman and BNP Paribas revise Poland GDP upwards

22 February 2012

Two major foreign banks have recently raised their expectations for future Poland’s GDP growth numbers, but domestic authorities are downplaying the adjustments, claiming there’s no evidence of a fundamental shift in the country’s economic prospects, Rzeczpospolita daily reports.
BNP Paribas revised upwards its growth estimates for 2012 from 1.6 percent to 2.4 percent, while it envisions 2013’s figures rising from 2.4 percent to 2.7 percent growth. Goldman and Sachs has also reconsidered its previous prediction of 2 percent growth in 2012. It now believes the country’s gross domestic output will jump 2.5 percent.
“Upward revisions have indeed begun, but so far the ones hiking their predictions are those whose previous outlooks have been quite pessimistic,” says Monika Kurtek, chief economist at Bank Pocztowy. She admitted, however, that recent macroeconomic data and expectations of an improving situation in the Eurozone economies played a role in the corrected prediction.
