Government could sell off 33 Prague buildings

15 February 2019

The coalition government is making plans to sell off 33 of its administrative buildings around Prague, including those that house the Ministries of Regional Development, Finance, Environment and the main customs building. The main registry of office building lists 352 buildings in Prague that are used by state institutions and they consumer CZK 1.3bn annually to operate and maintain. But with many of these energy inefficient buildings in need of investment, the state could end up having to pay around CZK 25bn per year in order to bring them up to date. The government is assembling the data as part of an initiative to have a modern government quarter built at the end of the metro C line in Letňany on land owned by the City of Prague. So far, the state and the city have been unable to agree on the conditions of a deal that would make this possible.
