Government cracks down on foreign car registrations

26 April 2012

According to a decision adopted during a recent government meeting, road vehicles registered in other states, like Bulgaria, Italy or Spain, will be allowed on Romanian roads for a maximum 90 days each year.
The owners who exceed the deadline will be fined between RON 560, or RON 1,420. The decision was taken to discourage those Romanians that register their cars abroad, in order to avoid paying the registration tax at home.
Approximately 19,800 cars registered in Bulgaria are actually used in Romania, and more than 45,000 vehicles are registered in other states like Italy, Spain or the United Kingdom.
