Government seeks increased public share in utilities

8 January 2013

The Hungarian government reportedly wants to have a higher rate of public ownership in the country’s utility sector. “The government could not ignore a divestiture offer from one of the current owners of the utility firm, if one were to be made,” Janos Fonagy, the development ministry state secretary told media outlets.
Over the next few months, the government will examine whether it can further reduce the price of electricity, water supply, sewage and communal waste collection. In the mid-1990s, Hungary privatized many of its utilities, which are now owned by Western European companies like RWE A and E.ON SE.
