Government to discuss law on banning Airbnb

21 July 2020

Local Prague politicians have presented a bill to Parliament that would allow municipalities to regulate how many days per year owners of flats could rent their properties out on a short-term basis. The new law would even allow districts to ban short-term rental platforms like Airbnb from operating during certain times of the year. However, while there’s broad support across the political spectrum for the bill in Prague, its fate will decide primarily on the position of the Minister for Regional Development Klara Dostalová. “The bill from the City of Prague is definitely a step in the right direction and it contains interesting and substantial proposals,” she said. “On the other hand, it’s necessary to realize that Parliament already rejected a similar bill last year. We’ll definitely debate it in the government.” Some right-leaning politicians believe the bill gives too much power to the state to regulate what individuals are allowed to do with their own property.
