Greece opens 515 beaches over the weekend

18 May 2020

Greece opened its beaches for the weekend, but under strict hygienic measures that meant that drinks, music and sports were not allowed. In total, 515 beaches were opened, with beaches that people pay to use forced to sell just 40 tickets per 1,000 sqm. Visitors are required to leave 4 meters between chairs and parasols, with a maximum of two chairs allowed to be placed together. Anyone using a chair must cover it with a towel and o-site staff will disinfect them between guests.

Cafes and restaurants on the beach can only serve food and drinks that are taken with them, as all tables will be closed, while nothing alcoholic is allowed. Such restrictions are unlikely to encourage foreigners to come to Greece, supporting fears that up to 65 percent of all hotels could go bankrupt as a result of the coronavirus. That was the result of a poll carried out by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels. It found that 18.3 percent of hoteliers said it was highly likely they wouldn’t make it.
