The area on the Kirchberg plateau is also called the European Quarter. The European Court of Justice and the European Court of Auditors as well as the European Investment Bank are located here, in addition to other large apparatuses of the confederation of states. Despite this prestigious competition, the library building erected there has become one of the biggest architectural and cultural flagships of the district and the Grand Duchy.
Sustainable use of roof space:
This is already reflected in the planning: the building, designed by the Münster-based architects Bolles + Wilson, is divided into three main areas: the entrance area with a two-story reception hall as well as an adjoining floor with conference rooms, a middle area with consultation zones and the archive area with a total of five levels, above which the main reading room is arranged. The entire ensemble has a usable floor space of 24,029 m². Decisive for the planning were energetic, sustainable and simple usage aspects. For example, the roof surface is used for regenerative energy generation in the form of photovoltaic systems. In addition, the roof surfaces are almost completely covered with greenery and thus serve as an ecological protective covering for summer temperatures and as a refuge for bees and other insects.
Multipor fits perfectly into the concept:
In order to achieve good thermal insulation and wind tightness of the building envelope, suitable insulation materials had to be selected. The material also had to offer optimal fire protection and be in line with sustainable construction. The choice for the roof insulation finally fell on Multipor mineral insulation boards, which fitted perfectly into the concept due to their ecological properties and natural basis. Finally, the entire roof surfaces were insulated with a double layer of 180 mm thick Multipor mineral insulation boards, on top of which an upper slope insulation was also placed. With a delivery volume of 2,600 m³, this is the largest roof project in the entire history of Multipor across all countries to date.
