Discipline on construction sites is falling to “terrifying” levels, according to the German website Merkur.de. It writes that union officials are trying to step up pressure on the employers of construction workers to decrease the chances for infection. One union boss Michael Muller of IG BAU Upper Bavaria says that too many workers are behaving as if the danger has passed. “Many construction companies are taking the risk of infection lightly,” he told Merkur.de, after a recent inspection. “That is fatal. Often, it’s not possible for workers even to wash their hands. There’s no sink with soap and running water, not to mention disinfectant dispensers.” The union has joined a collective bargaining initiative broke down in June, following calls by the union for a pay increase of 6.8 percent, or at least €230 per month.
