GUS: The current Polish consumer confidence and leading confidence index fell m / m in August

The current Consumer Confidence Index (BWUK) has decreased by 1.1 percentage points. in m / m terms and amounted to minus 14.6 points in August this year, according to surveys carried out by the Central Statistical Office (GUS).

Among the components of the index, the assessment of the current ability to make important purchases deteriorated the most (a decrease by 5.5 percentage points). The assessment of the future financial situation of the household was also lower (a decrease by 0.7 percentage points). On the other hand, the assessment of the future the economic situation of the country, the current economic situation of the country and the current financial situation of the household (increases by 0.6 percentage points, 0.1 percentage points and 0.1 percentage points, respectively).

Compared to August 2020, the current value of BWUK is higher by 0.6 percentage points.

The leading consumer confidence index (WWUK), synthetically describing the individual consumption trends expected in the coming months, fell by 0.6 percentage points. compared to the previous month and amounted to -8.8.

The decrease in the value of the indicator was mainly influenced by the assessment of the possibility of future saving money (a decrease by 2.7 pp.). A decrease by 0.7 pp. Also occurred for the assessment of the future financial condition of the household. Higher values ​​than a month ago were recorded for assessments of the future level of unemployment and the future economic situation of the country (increases by 1 percentage point and 0.1 percentage point, respectively).

In August this year. WWUK reached the value by 7.7 percentage points. higher than in the corresponding month of 2020.

For 80% of the respondents, the current epidemiological situation had an impact on the responses to the consumer boom, it was also reported.

Both consumer confidence indicators can take values ​​from -100 to +100. A positive value means outnumber of optimistic consumers over pessimistic ones, while a negative value means outnumber of pessimistic consumers over optimistic consumers.

Among the respondents declaring the influence of the epidemiological situation on the responses to the consumer situation, 54.2% described it as moderate, and 25.8% as significant. For 20% of respondents, the current situation did not have any impact on the responses.

In August 2021, for 18.1% of respondents, the current epidemiological situation poses a significant threat to their personal health (a decrease by 4.6 percentage points compared to the previous month), the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported.

For 47.4% of respondents, the current epidemiological situation poses a great threat to the economy in Poland.

This month, 1,161 interviews were conducted using the telephone interview method in the period of 2-11 August 2021.
