According to estimates, the number of tourists using overnight stays fell by 49.9% y/y to 17.9 million in 2020, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. Tourists were given 51.4 million overnight stays, which means a decrease by 45% y/y last year.
The occupancy rate of bed places in all tourist accommodation establishments in 2020 amounted to 26.8% and was lower by 13.8 percentage points compared to the previous year.
In 2020, 51.4 million overnight stays were provided in tourist accommodation establishments (45% less than in 2019), including foreign tourists – 6.6 million (64.6% less than in the previous year). overnight stays were provided to tourists staying in hotels – 23.0 million, ie 45% of the total overnight stays, holiday resorts – 6.7 million (13%) and health resorts – 5.3 million (10%).
The peak of the tourist season was in the summer months (July and August), when 5.9 million people used accommodation facilities, i.e. 33.1% of all tourists (in 2019 it was 25.5%).
Overnight stays provided in the summer season (July and August) accounted for 38.5% of all overnight stays provided in 2020, but compared to the previous year it was less by about 1/4, the Office reported.
Among people staying in tourist accommodation establishments in 2020 there were 2.3 million foreign tourists and they accounted for less than 13% of all tourists using the accommodation facilities (in 2019 – 21%), the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported.
