H. Králové will allocate the new flats on Pražská Street as an incentive, for example to teachers

9 May 2023

The Hradec Králové City Hall has again changed the method of occupying the recently completed eleven flats on Pražská třída in the Kukleny district. It would like to allocate them to people with professions that are in short supply in the city. For example, teachers, doctors or public transport drivers. For now, the new tenants cannot move into the apartments because of a technical problem with the electricity connection, Kateřina Rohlíčková, a spokeswoman for the town hall, it was announced today.

The flats were built by the town hall from 2020 in a reconstructed apartment building at a cost of CZK 26.1 million excluding tax. Originally, the town hall thought the flats would be of a social type and occupied by people in housing need who would pay reduced rent. The town hall received a European subsidy of CZK 21.4 million for the conversion of the house for social housing, but in the end it did not use it.

This January, the town hall offered the flats for rent using the so-called envelope method, i.e. to the highest bidder. The town subsequently received 16 applications, which was less than the town hall had expected. However, due to problems with the electricity connection, the town hall cancelled the procedure and did not open the envelopes with the bids. The tenants were originally supposed to move into the apartments in early May.

The city is solving the electricity connection problem. “We are still waiting for the work to be carried out, CEZ has notified the city of an interval of approximately four to six months. The assumption is that by the end of August the electrical connection could be resolved,” the spokeswoman said. The city estimates that the first tenants could move into the apartments in September.

The apartments are one- to three-bedrooms and range in size from 42 to 97 square feet. They have new kitchens and each apartment comes with one parking space at the building. The former tenants of the building, which has in the past been described as a socially excluded area, have been given notice by the city. Subsequently, the town hall started rebuilding.

The city has almost 1,000 flats available for different groups of residents in need of support. Of these, almost 700 are social flats with reduced rents, 132 are starter flats and the city has about 160 flats set aside for families with children. In total, the city has about 1,340 flats. Hradec Králové has over 90,000 inhabitants.
