According to the General Secretariat for Public Revenue, Greek citizens owe €86m in taxes, social security funds and overdue penalties.
In all, as of January 1, 4.3 million Greeks recorded overdue debts towards the public revenue services. This number represents more than half the total number of Greek adults and citizens that are obliged to file taxes.
About 3.6 million Greeks have debts in excess of €3,000 towards the public sector. High unemployment, currently at 24.5 percent along with high taxes and economic stagnation have reduced the ability of Greeks to meet their tax obligations.
