Heading for a new round of tension over Hungary’s deficit?

European Union officials aren’t letting up with their pressure tactics on the Hungarian government, warning that the outcome of discussions today could be a refusal to suspend part of its funding package for 2013. Having warned Budapest repeatedly about the size of its budget deficit, the government’s most recent proposed deficit for next year has again come in too high at 3.6%. Prime minister Viktor Orban’s public stance on the matter is that there’s still sufficient time to make any needed adjustments to the budget, but markets are beginning to sit up and take notice again.
