Hotel Praha has a residential future

22 January 2013

The Hotel Praha complex in Prague 6 Hanspaulka could be changed into a residential complex after two decades of disturbingly high vacancy. However, its new owner, František Savov, claims he hasn’t decided yet whether to reconstruct the original buildings (a hulking structure built in the 1970’s Brutalist style), or whether to tear it down and start again from scratch. What he is clear on is that it will no longer serve as a hotel.
Built in 1981 to accommodate and entertain the guests of the Communist-era elite, the building is economically unsustainable as a hotel. But as it sits on a highly attractive 100,000 sqm plot in one of Prague’s most sought-after residential addresses, Savov is convinced value can be unlocked from the site. He bought the complex, which offers 136 rooms and 52 apartments from its Russian owners for an undisclosed price.
