Humpolec in the Pelhřimov Region wants to launch an architectural competition for the design and use of the Federal House and surrounding buildings. It intends to launch the competition in the autumn. In the meantime, it has set up a working group to draw up the specifications for the competition. According to Deputy Mayor Petr Machek (SNK – HUMPOLECGO!), it is not yet possible to estimate the costs that the reconstruction will require.
“What is already clear, however, is that the reconstruction of this complex will probably become one of the most financially demanding investments of the city,” Machek said. It will cost several hundred million.
The city block, whose revitalization is being prepared by the city, consists of the Federal House and the former weaving school. “Both buildings are very important for Humpolec, both historically and socially, but their condition requires major reconstruction. The potential of their possible connection and the creation of an important socio-cultural hub within the city is discussed for their intended use. The architects who will participate in the competition have the opportunity to design both buildings simultaneously, which brings a greater range of possibilities than if each building were designed separately,” said Marcela Průchová, spokesperson for the Humpole City Hall.
The project should also deal with a possible extension to the side blind gable of the Federal House, the use of the school courtyard and adjacent public spaces. The interior of the buildings will also be an important part of the brief. The specifications for the architectural competition are expected to be reviewed by City Council committees in mid-August.
The Community House, which has stood on Smetana Street since 1899, was bought by the city a year ago from a private owner for more than CZK 28 million. The building operated as a social and cultural institution under the administration of the associations until nationalisation in the mid-20th century. Subsequently, it became a cinema. After the new cinema was opened in the city, the ruined Society House was threatened with demolition. It was stopped by the change in social conditions after 1989, when the house was bought by private owners and partially renovated.
This year’s budget for Humpolec, with about 11,000 inhabitants, is approximately CZK 590 million.
