The government and the city of Budapest are in talks about the way to finance the capital city’s transport company, BKV. The discussions appear to be going nowhere fast, as the two parties have only been able to come up with two-thirds of the necessary money needed to keep the company running. The cabinet is willing to introduce the electronic ticketing system and a traffic charge, but is not interested in introducing new taxes or raising existing ones. Budapest’s City Council has decided in January to implement an electronic ticketing system, which would go into practice beginning in 2014, but it sees the creation of new taxes as the only realistic long-term solution.
