In an effort to keep refugees from crossing into the country, the Hungarian government completed work on the first phase of a four-meter-high fence along its 110-mile border with Serbia. “The first phase was delivered two days before the planned deadline,” the country’s Ministry of Defence wrote in a statement.
The Hungarian parliament approved construction of the wall in June. “Hungary is confronted with the biggest surge of migrants in its history. Its capacities are overloaded by 130 percent,” said Interior Minister Sandor Pinter. The legislation was criticized by UN and human rights organizations. The Hungarian government says that the number of people entering the country doubled from 43,000 to 72,000 in 2014.
