Hungary extends curfew restrictions indefinitely

10 April 2020

In its ongoing effort to curb the coronavirus outbreak, the Hungarian government will extend its nationwide curfew restrictions indefinitely, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced in a message posted to Facebook. The decision comes following news that Hungary has succeeded to flatten the curve. The government decided to extend the curfew after consulting with epidemiologists, scientists, mayors and the police, Orbán added. “We have imposed curfew restrictions two weeks ago. I know, it is a hard thing, as it causes inconvenience for us all, but the deadline will expire soon, this Saturday,” the prime minister said. The government will review whether to keep the curfew restrictions in place on a weekly basis. The Hungarian Parliament passed a law last month that allows Orbán to rule by decree while the country fights to contain the coronavirus. Orbán said he would use the sweeping powers granted to him “proportionately and rationally.”
