Hungary halts gas shipments to Ukraine

26 September 2014

Hungary has unexpectedly stopped its gas shipments to Ukraine indefinitely, claiming there were expectations of a large increase in gas being shipped the opposite way. In a statement the pipeline’s operator wrote that system users had notified it that they would have significant demand increases starting Sept. 26. “In order to sustain supply security and system balance the (Ukraine-Hungary border) hub must be switched in a way that all pipelines on the network are suitable for shipments [towards Hungary],” wrote FGSZ. The company claims that the 6 billion cubic meters it is supposed to supply Ukraine with annually is not guaranteed and that it is subject to technical and market conditions.
