Hungarian National Economy Minister György Matolcsy announced that Hungary has made a €607m payment of its 2008 IMF loan ahead of time. Hungary signed a stand-by arrangement with the International Monetary Fund in November 2008 for €8.8bn. Hungary made the payment in Japanese yen more than two weeks ahead of schedule in what Matolcsy called a financial show of strength. He said the move was made possible by the recent commercial success of its euro-denominated treasury bonds.
