Hungary recruiting Asian workers to fill labor shortages

29 October 2019

Faced with a growing labor shortage, Hungarian businesses are recruiting an increasing number of Asian workers. The government has issued 75,000 work permits this year, mainly to workers coming from Ukraine as well as Vietnam, China and India. This a sharp increase from the 13,000 permits issued in 2015. “It is impossible to realize a large-scale project without foreign workers,” Eva Toth, a representative of the chemical industry trade union, told AFP. Gyula Pallagi, head of the construction workers union, added that the construction sector needs an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 additional workers.
