Hungary’s controversial new road tax

5 January 2015

A new law has come into effect which changes to the current system for charging motorists to use the country’s motorways. Until now, motorists were obliged to purchase a virtual vignette which were monitored by cameras which automatically check the license plate numbers of cars on all of Hungary’s motorways. Motorists will now be given the opportunity to buy regional motorway passes for HUF 5,000 (€16) instead of the usual annual charge of HUF 41,000. Opposition leaders warn that this only looks like a reduction in the costs for motorists but that the reality would only be new costs to taxpayers for implementing the new system. A move is afoot to take the new law to the constitutional court.
