Hypernova closing in Bratislava, Košice

30 November 2016

Hypernova is closing its locations at the Avion shopping park in Bratislava and at Atrium Optima in Košice. The number of Hypernova hypermarkets, operated by Terno group, has downsized from 20 to a mere five in Slovakia in recent years. Hypernova in Avion may be replaced by Kaufland, which already expressed interest in taking over the space. The reduction of the loss-making network started under the chain’s former owner, Michal Holík, who was connected with J&T and took Hypernova over from Ahold in 2014. In early 2016, the group of supermarket chains operated by Terno, branded as Terno, Moja Samoška and Hypernova, was sold to Sandberg Capital, led by another former J&T partner, Martin Fedor. Out of the nine Hypernova hypermarkets the group still operates, only three are located on properties owned by the group, while a few others were closed after the owner failed to negotiate good lease conditions.
