ID Logistics, a logistics operator specializing in contract logistics, has completed the expansion of the distribution center of the Carrefour retail chain in Bydgoszcz. Increased by an additional 4.8 thousand sqm, the warehouse area now totals 41.7 thousand sqm. The expansion involves expanding the storage area for items requiring cold storage.
ID Logistics has been servicing the Carrefour chain’s distribution center in Bydgoszcz for several years, where it is responsible for managing the processes of storage, warehousing, preparation and distribution of goods to stores in northern and western Poland. The warehouse is dedicated to handling various types of goods, including food – ambient and controlled temperature, household chemicals and cosmetics. Now the facility has gained a new area – fresh, where goods requiring low temperatures can be stored.
The fresh area stores sensitive foodstuffs that require strictly controlled temperatures. Its expansion was necessary mainly due to an increase in the range and scope of fish handling, including fresh fish.
“During the year, fish production is at a similar level to meat production. However, when their consumption increases significantly during the holiday season, we handle up to three times as much in the warehouse. Fish is an extremely sensitive and perishable article, requiring restrictive storage conditions, at 0-2°C. The increase in quantity and assortment required us not only to expand the zone, but also to implement additional solutions to ensure safety and high quality of warehouse service,” says Anita Szewczuk, director of the distribution center in Bydgoszcz.
In addition, from the Bydgoszcz distribution center, fish, including imported fish, are delivered to Carrefour chain warehouses in Rawa Mazowiecka and Psary. An important task of the ID Logistics team, among other things, was to prepare a schedule for the advancement of deliveries, taking into account the timeliness of production. Specialized washing and disinfection equipment was installed in the new hall. Palomats, i.e. automatic pallet storage, are also used, which not only optimized and simplified work, but also increased the area of available space. To ensure efficient handling of the increased volume, the team responsible for fish storage handling has been strengthened.
“Together with our client, we are now preparing to implement special transport boxes, isoboxes. These are rollers adapted for transporting sensitive goods at low temperatures. Thanks to this, fish or meat is transported in ideal conditions for this assortment, without worrying about loss of quality,” explains Anita Szewczuk.
During the expansion of the Bydgoszcz distribution center, special attention was also paid to the proper adaptation of all temperature zones, depending on the requirements of individual commodity groups and in accordance with Carrefour’s strict requirements. As a result, temperature-sensitive goods are stored in the most favorable thermal conditions for them – vegetables and fruits (4-7°C), dairy products (0-4°C), meat and fish (0-2°C).
