Ikea Romania won’t use state funds for technical unemployment

18 June 2020

Ikea Romania is not planning to use state funding to cover technical unemployment as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. The Swedish company had received RON 858,504 from the government for the period of March 17 to June 12 but said its results were better than expected and is requesting the state funding go toward segments that are in more dire need.

Ikea had been bracing for a 70- to 80-percent business loss at the start of the pandemic. But after reopening its 23 stores in Romania, Ikea is reporting an avalanche of new orders. “Now we know more than we knew in February or March, so we want to go back and say thank you for helping us through this difficult time, now we want to see how we can give back what we have received,” Ikea said in a statement.
