The University of Ostrava has named a consortium made up of IMOS Brno and Beskydska stavebni winners of a tender for the construction of a multifunctional complex in an area called Černý louka. The new facility will serve both as a center for design and art as well as for sports activities. “What’s unique about the project isn’t just the innovative connection of art and sports, which is primarily useful for the university, but above all it’s proof about the benefits of cooperation between the city and the university,” the university’s rector Jan Lata told the daily Denik. “The buildings will go up on land that had long been in very bad condition even though it’s right in the center of town.” Construction is due to begin within two weeks and should cost nearly CZK 1bn. The state will cover more than 70 percent of the bill, while the city will pitch in over CZK 150m.
