Infineon completes chip factory shell in Villach

14 May 2020

The shell of Infineon Technologies’ new chip factory in Villach, Austria was completed, despite the coronavirus crisis. Construction on the €1.6bn factory began just a year ago, but production is set to begin already in 2021. The 120-meter long factory has a gross floor area of 60,000 sqm and it stands 35 meters high. Up to 350 construction workers were involved in the work.

Thomas Reisinger, Board Member for Operations at Infineon Austria, said that even as the impact of the coronavirus became more severe, construction was able to continue while following all required safety measures for the protection of health. Around 40 percent of the 400 highly qualified jobs required in the new chip factory have already been filled. The city of Villach agreed to build its an access road to Infineon, work on which has already been completed.
