In what could prove to be the first over-reach of his current stay in power, Viktor Orban is being confronted with serious protests over plans to place a tax on Internet use. The plan was to charge HUF 150 (about 50 euro cents) per gigabyte, but it’s sparked protesters to fill the streets in Budapest in their tens of thousands. Worse, for Orban, the protesters are attempting to dictate events by demanding he climb down on the planned tax, the first of its kind in Europe, by today. Most protesters are probably peeved about the money, but anti-Orban organizers told the BBC that the move “follows a wave of alarming anti-democratic measures by Orban that is pushing Hungary even further adrift from Europe”.
