Investors given approval by German court to sue Volkswagen

9 August 2016

A German court will allow the investors to file a lawsuit against Volkswagen in a procedure similar to the class-action lawsuits typical in the United States. Around 170 private and institutional investors in Germany have filed the suit against Volkswagen as the fall out from the emissions scandal that erupted last year plays itself out. Volkswagen admitted to installing software in some of its diesel vehicles that was used to cheat US emissions tests. Although the class-action lawsuits are not allowed in Germany, the court is said to be using the German Markts Model Case Act. The total volume of the lawsuits is almost €4bn.
