IPR completes Prague’s new Metropolitan plan

2 December 2015

The Institute of planning and urban development (IPR) has completed a draft of Prague’s master plan, called Metropolitan plan. Preparations for the document took two years and IPR’s head Petr Hlaváček claims it’s the quickest the city has ever completed such a document. It’s intended to replace the existing master plan as of 2020. Prague’s construction regulations have to be approved first, however.
Hlaváček says that while current master plan dealt primarily with the function of buildings, the Metropolitan plan mirrors the approach employed by cities like Vienna, Munich and Copenhagen in focusing on the quality of public space. IPR also wants to use the Metropolitan plan to prevent city sprawl by motivating investors to tackle the redevelopment of brownfields and free zones inside the city. The plan is now up for approval by the urban planning department of the city of Prague.
