LOT Polish Airlines has been severely hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, and with virtually no operations since March, the airline has been reducing the size of its staff. The company has also offered vouchers to passengers whose flights were affected, promising to honor them when the company’s planes start flying again. But will they? Recent actions suggest otherwise. It was recently discovered that on May 29, LOT’s owner – the Polish Aviation Group (Polska Grupa Lotnicza) registered another company with a very similar name – LOT Polish Airlines SA. (The original name of the company is called Polskie Linie Lotnicze LOT). The move has raised suspicions that PLL LOT is gearing up to announce bankruptcy. The idea is that the new company LOT Polish Airlines SA would then take control of the company’s assets, while flying free of the old company’s liabilities towards staff and customers. The Polish Aviation Group has denied any such plans are afoot, claiming the new company registration is merely part of its moves to “sort the business out”.
