JWS union workers go on strike

19 October 2012

Union workers at the Polish coal giant Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) went on strike Friday, after failing to reach an agreement with the company’s board on salary. “The strike has started as planned, during the first shift and will continue throughout the day,” said Piotr Szereda, president of the union’s strike committee. “Only those workers who are essential to safety of the mine will work. This is in accordance with the mining law.” The strike will last 24 hours.
JWS said it would give mine workers a 3-percent pay raise and PLN 1,000 in bonuses. The union wants a 3.8-percent raise and PLN 2,500 in bonuses.
