Kaufland beats Metro and Carrefour in Romania

Over the past two years, the German retailer Kaufland has says it’s managed to de-throne the largest retailers in Romania, Metro and Carrefour, and make the top spot its own.

In 2010, Kaufland overtook Carrefour, and in 2011 it passed Metro Cash & Carry, which had claimed the top spot uninterrupted since 1996. Kaufland recorded turnover of €1.35bn in 2011, 20 percent more than in 2010 and 50 percent higher than in 2009, according to Ziarul Financiar.

In 2011, Metro Cash & Carry earned €1.06bn while Carrefour managed €1.18bn.
